BEYOND THE CLOUDS OF OUR PROBLEMS
THOSE SENIOR YEARS
A few days ago as I walked in front of a mirror at the house where I was visiting, I saw as for the first time the face of a very old man. Wrinkles, and sagging cheeks both made it very clear that the days of my youth had been left far behind.
Its a fact of life - that we are here for a relatively short time, and then we are gone. Only memories remain.
What can we leave the generation that follows? Money is not worth much,- it will soon be spent or lost. Houses, lands, possessions, - are they any better? And really would we only want to leave for our relatives and friends memories of how we built up a massive pyramid of wealth and power?
Did you ever read the poem called "Ozymandias"? It told of a powerful king who had once lived. At the foot of his statue were inscribed these words: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings. Look on me ye mighty and despair." Then the poet described the setting for the monument. Just desert sands, stretching forever. Nothing else. Nothing.
What sort of memories would you like people to have of you when you are no longer here? Will they remember you as a kind, considerate person who went about doing good? That's the best sort of memory to leave, because it doesn't fade. It may come as a surprise to you to know the definition of greatness that Jesus gave. He said that whoever would like to be great, should be a servant. He wasn't talking about subserviency. Just helping people. Doing to others what you would like them to do to you. Helping others to achieve their honest goals. Helping them to be the best that they can be.
May I suggest that you read an article in this website called: "God's Incredible Promise." If you can get a good understanding of what is written there, you may see also that while you are still here you could be a tremendous influence for good amongst your relatives and friends.
There is another thing that I want to mention too. It may well be that you are battling a bit. Things are not always rosy for seniors. There are three other articles in this website which may help you: "Beyond Your Problems There Is Hope", "The Poverty Trap," and "For Those Who Are Sick." Read these too - they may contain just the help that you need.
One of the themes of this series of articles is to give my readers the assurance that GOD HAS PROMISED TO MAKE ALL THINGS NEW, because He intends to make a new heaven and a new earth. It will be a place where there will be no more crying, no more sadness, no more sickness, no more death, no more pain. All will be peace and happiness. You can share in this if you wish. You owe it to yourself to read the articles mentioned above, where you will learn how you too can be a part of what God has promised.
Then you can share with your friends and relatives how they too can have a part in this same future, and they will always remember you with kindness and affection.
What a memory you could leave for them!
May God bless you.
