BEYOND THE CLOUDS OF OUR PROBLEMS
WANT TO OVERCOMETHAT ADDICTION?
We live in an age of fear - fear for our security, fear of losing our job, fear of not finding a job, fear that we can't survive, fear for the future, fear as the world slips ever deeper into conflict, or just fear. Doctors tell us that often, most of their patients need treatment for stress - caused by underlying fear or insecurity.
Its not surprising then that many turn to a variety of quick fixes - alcohol, tobacco, drugs, even an excess of caffeine. Some turn to gambling or to sniffing glue or petrol. Anything to dull the brain for a while - or to obtain an artificial "high". This article is not written to tell you that you are unwise to be addicted to the substance or practice of your choice. You probably know that all too well - especially if you have tangled with the authorities.
A friend of mine, who lost his marriage, his children, his home, and everything that was dear to him, recently went back to the alcohol that had been largely the cause of his woes, claiming that he had it under control. He is simply not prepared to recognize the problem.
If you recognize that you have a problem, and that you want help, this article is for you. But you really do need to recognize this and want help. So this article is addressed to those who realise that they can't seem to break the cycle of wanting more and more (of whatever happens to be the substance of their choice for addiction), and who recognize their need of help.
Before we continue, it may help you to read firstly three other articles in this website. They are:
"Beyond Your Problems There Is Hope"; "God's Incredible Promise"; and "Just Not AbleTo Do What Is Right".
Now if you have taken on board the advice these articles offer, let me assure you that if you really want to break the cycle of your addiction and you ask God to help you, He will do so. You may not realise it, but you can talk to God as to a friend. Tell Him your problems. Ask Him to help you to kick the habit. Ask Him every day. Ask Him too, to help you to do what is right.
Initially, it may also make sense to seek help from an understanding doctor who can provide, over this difficult period, some medication to help ease the stress which you may be experiencing.
But remember that if you are prepared to do what God wants you to do, and you believe that He will help you, He will.
God wants you to live in peace, without fear, and without addiction to any substance, or wrong practice. If you understand God's love for you, you can look forward to a life free from the addiction that otherwise may well threaten to destroy your life. More than this, you can live in peace, without fear.
I hope that you will soon find this type of meaningful and fulfilling life.
